Brad Pitt, Jessica Beil, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Lawrence, and Ryan Gosling are all good looking people that happen to be celebrities. Most guys try to emulate their looks whether it be their hair, style, or just overall make up. Some do it because they think it will help them attract guys/girls, but there are others who do it because they love hearing how much they look like a specific celebrity. Who doesn’t love hearing how much they look like a famous hot celebrity? Whether they admit it or not, it’s a pretty cool compliment to receive. But what about when you receive that celebrity look a like that is not such an A-list hottie? How do you take the comment? Did they confuse the actor they were talking about? Is it a difference of opinion? Or is it just a really awkward moment where you realize they are insulting you by complimenting you? I had this recently happen twice within the past month. The first time happened to me and the other time happened to my fiance.
I recently was substitute teaching at a local high school when my celebrity look a like was thrown my way by several of the students. I had never heard this comparison before, and was kind of taken aback when they told me. I mean no disrespect to the celebrity I was compared to, but I’m not going to lie, I was hoping it was a joke. Then that feeling sets in when you start to question yourself saying “is that what I really look like?” They can’t be talking about the kid from Pleasantville could they? Maybe they meant the late great Paul Walker, who is by the way, my man crush. Damn I miss that guy. Unfortunately I knew they did not mean him because they then called me Spiderman. Yes, the celebrity look a like I got was Toby FREAKING Maguire. Now I have no idea whether or not he is considered good looking but seriously not Peter Parker! Why not Batman or Superman? I know he’s famous and sits courtside with Leo, but he’s in the same category as Elijah Wood. Don’t get me wrong, these are probably quality actors and good guys but when it comes to celebrity look a likes, it’s almost the same as being compared to a wet towel. So now when I substitute at that school I have kids shooting stupid spider webs at me all day. The sad thing is, I can’t blame them, it’s pretty damn funny.
The next celebrity look a like happened to my fiance when we were at a bar in Chicago. My fiance was at the bar with her friend getting a drink when a guy decided to make his move. First of all, what guy doesn’t check a girl’s finger these days, it’s just common sense. Anyways back to the bar, Rico Suave approached my fiance with the often used pick up line “you know who you look like.” To his credit, this is usually a pretty easy way to go, if you actually pick the right celebrity. This poor soul unfortunately did not. This chucko decided to tell my fiance she looked like Hilary Swank from Million Dollar Baby. The same Hilary Swank who was the famous actress that was used in The Office episode of Hot or Not.
Obviously, my fiance is super hot, so to me Hilary Swank is hot, let me just put that on the record. So out of nowhere, I had some guy come up to me, point to my fiance, and said he wanted to apologize. I asked him for what and he said he told my fiance she looked like Hilary Swank and she wasn’t happy about it. As soon as he said her name I laughed because that was one of the worst celebrities he could’ve used. My fiance DOES NOT like that comparison one bit. The guy seemed ok enough and I give him credit for coming up to me. So I leaned over to him and said, “if you would’ve said Jennifer Gardner, you could’ve been her Ben Affleck for the night.”
There’s nothing wrong with playing the celebrity look a like game, I do it all the time, but ask yourself first, would I want to look like that celebrity?
